Liebherr is a rather famous group, which is directly credited with the invention of the tower crane – a piece of kit which is used upon almost every large scale construction site today. That is not where this company’s relevance begins and ends, and they certainly haven’t been sitting on their laurels ever since. The company is very well known for the vision of its founder and consequent CEOs, and without Liebherr, construction today would look very different.
With roots in post-war Germany, Liebherr was founded with the sole desire of Hans Liebherr – a builder by trade – to rebuild his country. Hans Liebherr was able to see what would be needed to rebuild after the catastrophe of the Second World War, and identified that tools and machinery would be paramount.
With the assistance of notable designers and tradesmen, he invented the first tower crane in 1949 – named the TK10. The crane was invaluable to the reconstruction effort, boasting superior portability and an ease in regard to setting it up and getting it ready to go. This invention, and the subsequent demand for the tower crane in multiple countries, was the driving force behind Liebherr’s expansion into construction machinery of many types.
Hans Liebherr, in regard to finding a premises suitable for the manufacture of what would soon become a very reckonable force within the construction machinery production industry, identified, of all things, a refrigerator making factory as a place to start. It’s rather surprising, but for a good many years Liebherr produced refrigerators as well as heavy-duty construction machinery from that same factory until 1950, when he expanded operations to Europe and Africa, as well as having a good ground in public transportation systems such as trains. The German train system is one of the most efficient in the world, and we’re quite certain it’s because of the expertise of companies alike Liebherr.
Now boasting tower cranes of every kind, as well as mobile construction cranes, Liebherr produced an excellent series of hydraulic excavators, telescopic handlers and dumper trucks. Ground level is not where Liebherr’s activities end. Fascinatingly, the vision of the company has extended to both below the ground and the skies above, and they have provided many notable machines such as the universal duty cycle crawler crane and specially made piling and drilling rigs.  Liebherr has also made amazing advances in aeronautics – providing, servicing and managing aircraft air management systems, flight control systems and also actuation systems.
